A: Biciklizni lehet?
B: Vannak bicikliutak, de még így is veszélyes.
A: Taxizni érdemes?
B: Nem, mert nagyon drága. Dugó miatt, autóval ugyszintén nem érdemes Budapesten közlekedni.

Transportation in Budapest
A: What is the public transportation system like in Budapest?
B: In my opinion it is very good. You have everything: buses, the metro, trams, interurban trains and trolleys. They circulate with a fairly high frequency. That is why you can get pretty easily from one place to another.
A: Can you ride your bicycle in Budapest?
B: There are bicycle lanes, however it’s still dangerous.
A: Is is worth taking a taxi?
B: No, because it’s very expensive. Because of traffic jams, driving a car around Budapest it is also not worth it.

Advanced Romanian_Talking About the Weather in a funny way
1.
5.
Acum sînt cinci grade Celsius sub zero, dar termometrul arată minus zece grade. Azi noapte a îngheţat. A îngheţat şi lacul, au îngheţat şi rîurile. A îngheţat şi pişatul în mine.
Here is the audio recording of the text. Enjoy.

Advanced Romanian - Talking about the weather: Vara a luat sfirsit
Vara a luat sfîrşit
New Words
a luat sfîrşit – it is over
Ce chestie! – That is really something! (Used when one is surprised about something!) (only in spoken Romanian)
săptămîna trecută – last week
caniculă – very hot weather
trebuie să te îmbraci gros – you must put on a thick layer of clothes
răcoare bine de tot – really, and I mean really chilly
dis-de-dimineaţă – very early in the morning
frunzele copacilor – tree leaves
streaşină - roof eave
atîrnă – are hanging
ţurţuri de gheaţă - icicles
Nu mai este cum a fost! – It’s no longer the way it iused to be!
brusc – all of a sudden
urăsc – I hate
îmi place să admir – I enjoy watching
peisajele de iarnă – winter landscapes
doar – only
la televizor – on TV
vară – summer
iarnă – winter
toamnă – autumn
primăvară – spring
întunecat – dark (here: gloomy)
Vremea este aşa cum este! – The weather is barely somehow!

Intermediate Romanian Lesson: Cum te cheama?
1. Pe mine mă cheamă ...
Salut. Pe mine mă cheamă Mircea. Pe tine cum te cheamă?
Pe mine mă cheamă Vasile.
Hello. My name is Mircea (literally: I am called Mircea). What is your name? (literally: What are you called? )
My name is Vasile.
Conjugation of the reflexive verb a se chema
pe mine mă cheamă (first person singular) - I am called
pe tine te cheamă (second person singular) - you are called
pe el îl cheamă/pe ea o cheamă (third person singular masculine/feminine) - he/she is called
pe noi ne cheamă (first person singular) - we are called
pe voi vă cheamă (first person singular) - you are called
pe ei îi cheamă/ pe ele le cheamă (first person singular) - they are called
The first part can sometimes be omitted without affecting the structure and the meaning of the sentence.
(pe mine) mă cheamă (first person singular)
(pe tine) te cheamă (second person singular)
(pe el) îl cheamă/pe ea o cheamă (third person singular masculine/feminine)
(pe noi) ne cheamă (first person plural)
(pe voi) vă cheamă (second person plural)
(pe ei) îi cheamă/ pe ele le cheamă (third person plural)
2. Numele + meu (tău etc.) + este
Salut. Numele meu este Mircea. Care este numele tău?
Numele meu este Vasile.
Hello. My name is Mircea. What is your name?
My name is Vasile.
nume – (noun, masculine) name
meu – (possessive pronoun, masculine) my
declension of possessive pronoun always corresponding in gender and number with the qualified noun
MASCULINE
numele meu (first person singular) - my name
numele tău (second person singular) - your name
numele său (generic term for both genders)/lui/ei - his/her name
numele nostru (first person plural) - our name (not names)
numele vostru (second person plural) - your names (not names)
numele lor (third person plural) - their name (not names)
FEMININE
casa mea (singular feminine) – my house
casa ta – your house
casa sa (generic term for both genders)/lui/ei – his/her house
casa noastră – our house
casa voastră – your house
casa lor – their house
You noticed that the possessive pronoun is placed after the noun it qualifies, unlike English where the possessive adjective is prepositioned. Examples:
Romanian - Casa mea este construită din lemn.
English - My house is made out of wood.
3. Polite form of the personal pronouns: dumneavoastră, dumnealui, dumneaei, dânsul, dânsa
Dumneavoastră cine sunteţi (old spelling: sînteţi)?
or
Care este numele dumneavostră?
And who are you? (And who might you be?)
or
What is your name?
Dumneavoastră replaces tu and voi when when one addresses people who are older than the speaker, senior in rank or strangers. Dumneavoastră will, as a rule of thumb, be used with the second person plural form, even if it replaces the
form of tu. Dumneavoastră can be abbreviated to dvs or dv in writing.
Dumneavoastră has respective forms for the third person singular and plural:
dumnealui/ dumneaei (third person singular masculine/feminine)
dumnealor (third person plural form for both feminine and masculine)
Another polite variant of the personal pronoun is dânsul, the dumnealui forms can also be used to refer to a third party in a respectful way.

The Romanian Sounds and the Romanian Alphabet
The Romanian alphabet
As we have said, Romanian uses the Roman alphabet. Its orthography is mainly phonemic: i.e., each letter represents the same sound in any word in which it occurs, with only a very few exceptions.
Here is a table of the 31 letters of the Romanian alphabet in their proper alphabetical order. Each letter is accompanied by an English word containing much the same sound; a Romanian word that uses the letter; and the Romanian pronunciation of the name of the letter.
Letter (Letter name) Sounds like English Example
a (a) mud nai (panflute)
ă (euh) faster masă (table)
â (â) no equivalent când (when)

A Typical Day in My Life
I usually wake up at 7 o’clock. I still lie in bed for half an hour. I get up at 7:30 and then, half an hour later I leave for work. I prepare my breakfast in the kitchenette of hour company. I seldom miss out on a cup of coffee. Around noon (/lunch time), that is at 12 o’clock, I go into the city. I drop by some second-hand bookshops, then I stop at the university where I check my e-mail and read the latest news on-line. Every working day I teach language classes after 5 pm. In the evening, after class, I go for a walk in the park. The atmosphere in the Hungarian capital at dusk is almost enchanting. I get home in the evening after 8 pm. We have dinner pretty late, but we have become used to it. Almost every evening I watch an Asian movie. Before switching off the lights, I lie in bed reading a book of some sorts. I quickly become overwhelmed by sleep, and I finally fall asleep. I never go to bed before midnight.

plec acum. Mai vorbim. Salut.
Aurel: Transmitele salutări alor tăi.

Cultural and Grammar Notes
The meaning of the verb a plăcea is „to like”, as in „like doing something”. One must notice, that in Romanian, the verb a plăcea is preceded by the personal pronoun in the dative case. Furthermore, the verb a plăcea is followed by a verb in the conjunctive mood. The conjungation of the verb in the conjunctive mood follows the pattern we have learned so far. The only exception from the rule is the form of the third person singular. This form has to be learned separately for each verb: îmi place, îţi place, îi place (both feminine and masculine form), ne place, vă place, le place
Here are a few more examples with the verb a plăcea. Pay attention to the conjugation of the verbs in the conjunctive mood. These verbs are in boldfaced for the sake of emphasis.
Îmi place să călătoresc. Nu îmi place să fac politică.
I like travelling. I don’t like politics.
Îţi place să citeşti? Nu îţi place să te întîlneşti cu vecinul de la etajul doi.
Do you like reading? You don’t like meeting the neighbour on the second floor.
Îi place să cînte. Nu îi place să citească.
He likes singing. He doesn’t like reading.
Ne place să mergem la munte. Nu ne place să mergem la mare.
We like going to the mountains. We don’t like going to the seaside.
Vă place să faceţi muncă voluntară? Nu vă place să participaţi la şedinţe de lucru.
Do you like doing volunteer work? You don’t like participating in work meetings.
Le place să bea bere. Lor nu le place să bea apă minerală.
They like drinking beer. They don’t like drinking mineral water.
For the sake of revision, let us take a closer look at the conjugation of the verbs in the above sentences. First, the conjugation in the indicative mood, than, I will point out the third person singular exception by placing it between brackets.
There are four basic conjugation verb groups.
1. The first group is that of verbs ending in –a in the infinitive form (dictionary form). One such verb is a cînta (sing)
eu cînt, tu cînţi, el/ea cîntă (să cînte), noi cîntăm., voi cîntaţi, ei/ele cîntă
2. The second conjugation group is that of verbs with an –ea ending in the infinitive mood
a bea
eu beau, tu bei, el/ea bea, noi bem, voi beţi, ei/ ele beau
The verb is a bea is the only exception where the exception to the rule does not apply. Therefore, even the third person singular form of the verb in the subjunctive mood will be the same as the third person singular form of the verb in the indicative mood.
el bea (he drinks) – îi place să bea (he likes drinking)

She is from Odorehiu Secuiesc (Szekely Udvarhely) Where are you from? I come from Oradea. There Romanians and Hungarians live together.
Language and cultural notes
„Care-i” – This contracted form is very common in spoken Romanian. The standard form is „Care este”
limbă – language; tongue
matern – maternal
limba ta maternă – your mother tongue
acasă – at home
în familie – within the family
a vorbi – to speak (eu vorbesc, tu vorbeşti, el/ea vorbeşte, noi vorbim, voi vorbiţi, ei/ele vorbesc
atât ... cât şi – both. ... and ...
la fel de ... (+ adj.) – equally ((+ adjective)
„taică-meu” and „maică-mea” are both common in spoken Romanian. The formal variants are „tatăl meu” and „mama mea”.
Secuime – is a geographical area of Romania, historically inhabitted by a magyarized Hungarian speaking population, the Szekely, who live mainly in the Romanian counties of Hargita and Covasna.
In Ardeal (Transylvania) many Hungarians refer to geographical places by their Hungarian name only, thus, being completely oblivious of the Romanian reality: Examples: Odorheiu Secuiesc – Szekely Udvarhely
de unde – where from
din – from (Din is a preposition used befor names of places to indicate place origin)
trăiesc – to live (eu trăiesc, tu trăieşti, el/ea trăieşte, noi trăieşte, voi trăiţi, ei/ele trăiesc)
la un loc – in one place
Adjectives and pronouns have four forms, because there must be a gender and number concordance between the adjectives and the nouns determined by them.:
tatăl meu – my father (masculine gender singular)
mamă mea – my mother (feminine gender singular)
copiii mei – my children (masculine gender plural)
fetele mele – my daughters (feminine gender plural)
calul tău – your horse (masculine singular)
limba ta – your language (feminine singular)
caii tăi – your horse (masculine plural)
casele tale – your houses (feminine plural)
Acasă în familie vorbim atît româna cît şi maghiara. Vorbesc maghiara şi româna la fel de bine!
Taică-meu (tatăl meu) este român originar din Iaşi. Maică-mea (mama mea) este unguroaică din secuime. Este din Odorheiu Secuiesc.
Tu de unde eşti de loc? Din Oradea.
Acolo trăiesc la un loc români şi unguri!

In maghiara, propozitia cea mai simpla are urmatoarea structura: Ez egy ____. Limba maghiara nu distinge 3 genuri gramaticale asa cum face limba romana. De aceea nu este mare bataie de cap cu acordul in gen intre partile de vorbire. Un exemplu elocvent este cuvintul 'ez' care, in functie de situatie poate sa aiba unul din urmatoarele sensuri: acesta, aceasta. Grupul de litere 'gy' din maghiara are o pronuntie relativ dificial. In Ardeal, in zone locuite de maghiari, romanii il pronunta relativ corect.

Schema tonala.
tonul 1 reprezentat grafic ca o liniuta orizontala “-“ plasata deasupra vocalei, face astfel incit silaba sa se pronunte la un nivel inalt, constant;
tonul 2 reprezentat ca o linie oblica inclinata spre dreapta, in sens ascendent, “/”, induce o pronuntie urcatoare, asemanatoare unui ton al mirarii;
tonul 3, reprezentat ca un ”u” mic, coboara si apoi urca, dar nu ajunge atit de sus precum finalul tonului 2;
tonul 4, marcat ca o linie oblica inclinata tot spre dreapta dar in sens descendent ”\” induce o pronuntie coboritoare, ca un final de afirmatie.
