English Translation
A Typical Day in My Life
I usually wake up at 7 o’clock. I still lie in bed for half an hour. I get up at 7:30 and then, half an hour later I leave for work. I prepare my breakfast in the kitchenette of hour company. I seldom miss out on a cup of coffee. Around noon (/lunch time), that is at 12 o’clock, I go into the city. I drop by some second-hand bookshops, then I stop at the university where I check my e-mail and read the latest news on-line. Every working day I teach language classes after 5 pm. In the evening, after class, I go for a walk in the park. The atmosphere in the Hungarian capital at dusk is almost enchanting. I get home in the evening after 8 pm. We have dinner pretty late, but we have become used to it. Almost every evening I watch an Asian movie. Before switching off the lights, I lie in bed reading a book of some sorts. I quickly become overwhelmed by sleep, and I finally fall asleep. I never go to bed before midnight.

plec acum. Mai vorbim. Salut.
Aurel: Transmitele salutări alor tăi.

English Translation

Ştefan: And what do you like doing in your free time?
Aurel: Problem is that I don’t really have much free time.
Ştefan: You do if you take the time!

Ştefan: What sport do you like?
Aurel: I like jogging in the park. I also like working out in the gym.
Ştefan: One can tell you are in good shape.
Aurel: How do you like spending your free time?
Ştefan: I like spending my free time with my family. Well, I have to go now. We’ll talk again some other time. Bye.
Aurel: Give my best regards to your folks.

Cultural and Grammar Notes

The meaning of the verb a plăcea is „to like”, as in „like doing something”. One must notice, that in Romanian, the verb a plăcea is preceded by the personal pronoun in the dative case. Furthermore, the verb a plăcea is followed by a verb in the conjunctive mood. The conjungation of the verb in the conjunctive mood follows the pattern we have learned so far. The only exception from the rule is the form of the third person singular. This form has to be learned separately for each verb: îmi place, îţi place, îi place (both feminine and masculine form), ne place, vă place, le place
Here are a few more examples with the verb a plăcea. Pay attention to the conjugation of the verbs in the conjunctive mood. These verbs are in boldfaced for the sake of emphasis.

Îmi place să călătoresc. Nu îmi place să fac politică.
I like travelling. I don’t like politics.
Îţi place să citeşti? Nu îţi place să te întîlneşti cu vecinul de la etajul doi.
Do you like reading? You don’t like meeting the neighbour on the second floor.
Îi place să cînte. Nu îi place să citească.
He likes singing. He doesn’t like reading.
Ne place să mergem la munte. Nu ne place să mergem la mare.
We like going to the mountains. We don’t like going to the seaside.
Vă place să faceţi muncă voluntară? Nu vă place să participaţi la şedinţe de lucru.
Do you like doing volunteer work? You don’t like participating in work meetings.
Le place să bea bere. Lor nu le place să bea apă minerală.
They like drinking beer. They don’t like drinking mineral water.

For the sake of revision, let us take a closer look at the conjugation of the verbs in the above sentences. First, the conjugation in the indicative mood, than, I will point out the third person singular exception by placing it between brackets.
There are four basic conjugation verb groups.
1. The first group is that of verbs ending in –a in the infinitive form (dictionary form). One such verb is a cînta (sing)
eu cînt, tu cînţi, el/ea cîntă (să cînte), noi cîntăm., voi cîntaţi, ei/ele cîntă
2. The second conjugation group is that of verbs with an –ea ending in the infinitive mood
a bea
eu beau, tu bei, el/ea bea, noi bem, voi beţi, ei/ ele beau
The verb is a bea is the only exception where the exception to the rule does not apply. Therefore, even the third person singular form of the verb in the subjunctive mood will be the same as the third person singular form of the verb in the indicative mood.
el bea (he drinks) – îi place să bea (he likes drinking)

Care-i limba ta maternă?
Acasă în familie vorbim atît româna cît şi maghiara. Vorbesc maghiara şi româna la fel de bine!
Taică-meu (tatăl meu) este român originar din Iaşi. Maică-mea (mama mea) este unguroaică din secuime. Este din Odorheiu Secuiesc.
Tu de unde eşti de loc? Din Oradea.
Acolo trăiesc la un loc români şi unguri!

Translation
What is your mother tongue?
At home we sppeak both Romanian and Hungarian. I speak Hungarian and Romanian equally well! My father is a Romanian originally from Iaşi. My mother is a Hungarian from Szekely land. She is from Odorehiu Secuiesc (Szekely Udvarhely) Where are you from? I come from Oradea. There Romanians and Hungarians live together.

Language and cultural notes
„Care-i” – This contracted form is very common in spoken Romanian. The standard form is „Care este”
limbă – language; tongue
matern – maternal
limba ta maternă – your mother tongue
acasă – at home
în familie – within the family
a vorbi – to speak (eu vorbesc, tu vorbeşti, el/ea vorbeşte, noi vorbim, voi vorbiţi, ei/ele vorbesc
atât ... cât şi – both. ... and ...
la fel de ... (+ adj.) – equally ((+ adjective)
„taică-meu” and „maică-mea” are both common in spoken Romanian. The formal variants are „tatăl meu” and „mama mea”.
Secuime – is a geographical area of Romania, historically inhabitted by a magyarized Hungarian speaking population, the Szekely, who live mainly in the Romanian counties of Hargita and Covasna.
In Ardeal (Transylvania) many Hungarians refer to geographical places by their Hungarian name only, thus, being completely oblivious of the Romanian reality: Examples: Odorheiu Secuiesc – Szekely Udvarhely
de unde – where from
din – from (Din is a preposition used befor names of places to indicate place origin)
trăiesc – to live (eu trăiesc, tu trăieşti, el/ea trăieşte, noi trăieşte, voi trăiţi, ei/ele trăiesc)
la un loc – in one place

Adjectives and pronouns have four forms, because there must be a gender and number concordance between the adjectives and the nouns determined by them.:
tatăl meu – my father (masculine gender singular)
mamă mea – my mother (feminine gender singular)
copiii mei – my children (masculine gender plural)
fetele mele – my daughters (feminine gender plural)
calul tău – your horse (masculine singular)
limba ta – your language (feminine singular)
caii tăi – your horse (masculine plural)
casele tale – your houses (feminine plural)

In maghiara, propozitia cea mai simpla are urmatoarea structura: Ez egy ____. Limba maghiara nu distinge 3 genuri gramaticale asa cum face limba romana. De aceea nu este mare bataie de cap cu acordul in gen intre partile de vorbire. Un exemplu elocvent este cuvintul 'ez' care, in functie de situatie poate sa aiba unul din urmatoarele sensuri: acesta, aceasta. Grupul de litere 'gy' din maghiara are o pronuntie relativ dificial. In Ardeal, in zone locuite de maghiari, romanii il pronunta relativ corect. Dincolo de Carpati, romanii nu pronunta palatalizat, ei pronuntind un fel de 'ghi', ceea ce nu este corect.

Textul filmului:

Ez egy ceruza (creion).
______ szék (scaun).
______ asztal (masa).
______ könyv (carte).
______ telefon (telefon).

Chinese Money
一元, but in spoken Chinese 一块 is the word used.
一分, but in spoken Chinese 一角 is the word used.
一毛钱
1元 = 10分 = 100毛
The expression 五块钱 is oftentimes reduced to 五块, 钱 can be omitted in this context.
By omitting 钱, and 毛 (which is understood), 五块六毛钱 can again be reduced to 五块六. To express the numeral 2, we do not use 二, but 两.
Quite often we can hear the Chinese double a verb according to the following pattern:
verb + 一 + verb. Examples: 看一看 (have a look!),试一试 (Have a try!),尝一尝 (Takea bit and taste!),等一等 (Wait a sec!). We also here the verbs without 一 between them: 看看,等等,尝尝,试试. The second verb is usually pronounced with a neutral tone.

Vocabulary

şocantă – shocking
face referire la – refers to
zebra – zebra crossing
semaforul – traffic lights
stare băiatul s-a înrăutăţit – the boy’s condition got worse

Why study Chinese?

What you might already know

1. China is one of the world’s oldest and richest continuous cultures, over 5000 years old.
2. China is the most populous nation in the world, with 1.28 billion people.
3. Mandarin Chinese is spoken by 873 million speakers, making it the most widely spoken first language in the world. One fifth of the planet speaks Chinese.
4. In addition to the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan, Mandarin Chinese is also spoken in the important and influential Chinese communities of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, and Mongolia.
5. China has now become the second largest economy in the world.
6. China is one of largest trading partners of the European Union and other developed countries outside the European Union.
7. Many companies do business in China and have long-term investments there.

Things to consider

The study of the Chinese language opens the way to different important fields such as Chinese politics, economy, history or archaeology. But to study Chinese finally means to study a culture, a people. At the heart of Chinese civilization is its rich heritage of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and, more recently, film. They reflect the values, the struggles, the sensibility, the joys and the sorrows of this great people and often offer insights even into the most intimate feelings of people in the past or into high-level Beijing politics at he present that cannot be found anywhere else. These works help you understand what is behind the language, what makes it powerful, and how it actually functions in Chinese society. To be at ease and effective in a Chinese environment learning the language is half the battle, but knowing about the culture behind the language is the other.

Some surprising facts

Chinese has a relatively uncomplicated grammar. Unlike French, German or English, Chinese has no verb conjugation (i.e., tense inflection) and no noun declension (e.g., gender and number distinctions). For example, while someone learning English has to memorize different verb forms of “see/saw/seen,” all you need to do in Chinese is just to remember one word: kan. While in English you have to distinguish between “cat” and “cats,” in Chinese there is only one form: mao.
The basic word order of Chinese is subject — verb — object, exactly as in English. A large number of the key terms of Mandarin Chinese (such as the terms for state, health, science, party, inflation, and even literature) have been formed as translations of English concepts. You are entering a different culture, but the content of many of the modern key concepts is familiar.

Remember these two facts:

1. Currently Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over 1 billion people around the world, about one fifth of the global population;
2. Each year more and more students around the world whose mother tongue is not Mandarin are studying it with enthusiasm and success. If they all can learn it, so can you!

The study of Chinese literature and culture will help you bridge the cultural gap, better understand your Chinese counterparts, and create a platform of knowledge and understanding with them that is crucial for effective communication.

Chinese is important for your career!

1. International businesses prefer to hire people who speak more than one language. China has become a huge market, and business leaders are looking for people who can speak Chinese and operate successfully in a Chinese cultural context.
2. Knowing Chinese may give you an edge when competing for an important position.
3. China will play a major role in world affairs in the future. As China now has opened up to the West, there are opportunities for employment in all areas.

凑不到一块儿

实习回来,老师让每个留学生写一篇五百字的实习报告。玛丽写了三天,总是写不好,就去找朋友帮忙。朋友问她:“你学过多少汉字?” “大概一千多。” “一千多?”朋友吃惊地说:“那你写一篇五百字的文章一定没有问题!”玛丽不好意思地回答:“我学过的汉字虽然不少,可他们总是凑不到一块儿。”

Cultural notes and grammar

This is an informal dialogue between two friends, Marius and Mircea. There are two ways of informal greeting used in this dialogue. The first one is „Salut”. It’s the exact equivalent of the French greeting. „Ceau”, on the other hand, was borrowed from Italian. The pronunciation is slightlty different in both cases from the original languages.
The personal pronoun can sometimes be omitted from the sentence as is „Sunt bine”. One might as well add the personal pronoun „eu” (I), but not in this situation. The personal pronoun „tu” is used in the following sentence: „Tu cum eşti”. It is meant to lay an extra emphasis that in return, Mircea is curious to find out about Marius' well-being: „And how are YOU?”

The verb trebuie is always used in the following pattern:

trebuie + să + verb (conjunctive mode). Example: trebuie să merg

The verb a avea (have) has two basic uses. It is used, on the one hand, as an auxilliary verb like in English. Secondly, it can be used as a lexical verb to indicate possession. Example
auxilliary verb am văzut I have seen
lexical verb am o întâlnire I have a meeting

Tips on pronunciation:

[c]
c followed by e or i is pronounced like the English ch. Examples: ce, faci, ceau
When c is followed by other letters, it is normally pronounced k. Examples: car, lucrezi, acolo

[i]

The unstressed i at the end of a word requires plenty of practice before you can pronounce it correctly. Listen to the recording as many times as required to get it right. Examples: faci, eşti, ani.

[e]

In Transylvania, e has a different, more open pronunciation than in other parts of Romania. This is mainly due to the influence of the Hungarian language.
At the beginning of a word (except for scientific ones), e is usually pronounced as the English word yeah. Exemple: eşti, eu. This was caused by the influence of the Slavic languages in the region. Romanian is a neo-Latin language spoken in a country surrounded by peoples of Slavic tongue: the Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia and Moldova. A large portion of the Moldovan population is either russophile or Russian proper.

[sunt-sînt]
In spoken Romanian sunt and sînt are both variants of the same word. In writing, however, only the former is correct. That is because the orthographic reform of recent years that meant to emphasize the Latin origin of the Romanian language and it’s vocabulary. More to the issue in the lessons to come.
